High Authority Backlinks Beyond the DA Score

Authority metrics

High authority backlinks, beyond the score

High authority backlinks are links from sites with strong link profiles, usually scored with Moz's Domain Authority (DA) or Ahrefs' Domain Rating (DR). The score is a filter. A link earns its keep when the site has readers, the page is indexed and an editor chose to cite you.

Overview

How do you get them? Give a trusted publication a reason to cite you. For us that means digital PR: we research and write the stories, data and expert comments journalists use, pitch them through our journalist relationships, and keep going until your monthly placement minimum is met. Plans start at $6,000 a month for at least ten editorial links, which is $600 per placement, or less on the larger plan.

Domain Authority is Moz's model and Domain Rating is Ahrefs'. Both estimate the strength of a site's link profile on a 0 to 100 scale, and both are third-party predictions. Google has said it doesn't use a metric called domain authority. The scores correlate with ranking power, which is why vendors quote them, but a score can be inherited, inflated or irrelevant to your market, so read it alongside what it can't see.

Quick answer

How do you get high domain authority backlinks?

Give a trusted publication a reason to cite you: a data story, an expert comment on a live news story, or a useful resource. Buying links from sites sorted by DA mostly buys inventory that Google discounts. Our plans earn them through digital PR, from $6,000 a month for at least ten editorial links.

What this includes.

01

What DA and DR measure, and what they miss.

Both metrics summarize a site's inbound link graph: how many referring domains point at it and how strong those domains are. The scale is logarithmic, so moving from 70 to 80 takes far more link equity than moving from 20 to 30. That's why high scores are scarce and why sellers lean on them so hard.

Neither metric knows whether a site has readers, whether its traffic is rising or falling, whether it quietly sells guest posts, or whether the page your link sits on is indexed. A domain can keep a high score for years after its editorial standards slip, so check organic traffic in Ahrefs or Semrush, ranking keywords and recent bylined articles too.

02

When DA 45 beats DA 90.

A DA 45 trade publication read by your buyers usually does more than a DA 90 general-news aggregator. The trade title's pages rank for your commercial terms, its audience overlaps yours, and its citation reads as a topical endorsement. Relevance concentrates value, while a big general site spreads its authority across every subject it covers. What makes any single link good is a page-level question, covered under editorial backlinks.

03

What we report for every link.

Campaigns blend national press, which brings trust and reach, with specialist and trade outlets, which bring subject depth and the right readers. Every placement goes into a live report with the article URL, a screenshot, the page on your site it supports, and the available authority metrics and traffic checks.

We don't promise a minimum DA or DR per link. Editors decide whether and how to link, so the report shows what was earned, and only live, verified placements count toward your minimum.

04

An example, for illustration.

This is an illustrative example, not a client result. A payroll software company on Growth wants links to its payroll tax guides. We build a data story from public Bureau of Labor Statistics figures on wage growth by state and pitch it to business and HR desks.

The month's report might include one national business site with a DR in the 80s, two HR trade titles in the 40s and 50s, and two regional business journals. The trade links have the lower scores and are often the most relevant, which is why authority is read alongside audience.

05

Vetting authority before you pay for it.

Run three checks on any promised placement: the domain shows meaningful organic traffic, the linking section is indexed and human-edited, and the score is broadly consistent between Moz and Ahrefs, since a large gap often signals manipulation. The full sequence is in the backlink quality checklist and takes about five minutes per domain.

06

Authority and AI search.

Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and assistants like ChatGPT when they search the web, tend to cite pages that already rank and sources they already trust. Links from respected publications feed both: they help your pages rank, and the coverage puts your brand on the sites those answers draw from. Nobody can promise an AI citation, but authority built through coverage is the groundwork. More in how to build links for AI search.

Questions

Useful answers before you choose a package.

What DA counts as high authority?

Above 60 is common shorthand, but it depends on the niche. In a tight B2B market, a lower-scoring trade title with readers can be the strongest publication available. We treat authority metrics as diagnostics and judge the publication on audience, traffic, editorial standards and context.

Is DR more reliable than DA?

They disagree in useful ways. DR reacts faster to new links, while DA models more signals and moves slower. We check both, and a big spread between them usually means a profile built quickly, which deserves a closer look before anyone pays for a placement.

Do you guarantee a minimum DA per link?

No. Editorial coverage can't be pre-ordered by a third-party score. Each placement comes from an independent publication with its own readers, and the report shows the available metrics and checks for each link.

Can a high-DA link hurt?

If the site sells placements openly, its high score can sit alongside a link profile Google has already discounted. One bad buy rarely triggers a penalty, but you'll have paid a premium for a link that passes little or nothing.
